What is labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is the surgical reduction and reshaping of the labia minora - the “inner lips” that cover the female vaginal opening and clitoris. An excessively large labia minora can be a genetic phenomenon or more frequently results from trauma related to giving birth. Whatever the cause, it tends to get worse with age. Many women experience discomfort or even pain with intercourse and often this discomfort extends to the normal activities of daily living. Frequently, normal clothes and even panties become uncomfortable due to the excessive size of the inner labia. Along with the sexual difficulty and problems with clothes, many people feel that the condition is very unattractive, thus surgery for correction of labia minora excess. The overly large labia minora that results in difficulty wearing certain clothing, sexual difficulties, and/or embarrassment for aesthetic reasons, may be reduced doing a relatively minor surgical procedure. The surgery lasts approximately one hour and is performed under general anesthesia.

Recovery

Labiaplasty is performed as an outpatient procedure that typically results in mild discomfort and swelling for approximately two weeks. The incisions typically heal to an almost imperceptible fine line inside the outer lips (labia majora). Most normal activities may be resumed within a few days and sexual intercourse within approximately three weeks.
